Prince William and Kate Middleton know that the best way they can get anyone’s attention is by simply posting new photos of their children. And that’s exactly what they did this week when they shared a photo of their daughter Princess Charlotte to help encourage butterfly counting. Here’s what you need to know.
The 6-year-old can be seen gently holding a Red Admiral in her hands in a photo that has been shared by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s official Twitter and Instagram accounts. The photo was taken close to the Cambridge’s home in Norfolk and also includes some close ups of Peacock butterflies.
The photo was released just as it was announced that Prince William and Kate Middleton are taking part in the annual Big Butterfly Count run by the charity Butterfly Conservation.
They posted: “We wanted to share these beautiful Peacock and Red Admiral butterflies as part of Big #ButterflyCount initiative taking place across the UK.”
They added: “Butterfly Conservation are encouraging us all to count these incredible creatures because not only are they beautiful creatures to be around but they are also extremely important. Butterflies are vital parts of the ecosystem as both pollinators and components of the food chain. Hopefully you can beat last year’s total @savebutterflies!”
Some experts believe that the butterfly population will be badly hit this year with a warm April followed by a cold snap in May and a washout summer impacting numbers.
